Sesamoiditis

Your big toe joint is accompanied by two small, round bones that sit just underneath this joint. They play a significant role in maintaining proper function of the big toe.

However, they are prone to developing inflammation through excessive pressure of this big toe joint.

Common factors that contribute to sesamoiditis include:

  • High foot arches.

  • Lack of fat pad on the balls of the feet.

  • High impact activities that involve jumping or landing on the front of the foot (forefoot).

  • Poor foot structure including a “dropped metatarsal bone” or bunion - deformity.

At Sole Purpose Podiatry, we will diagnose this condition through a biomechanical assessment. A referral for imaging, particularly an X-ray, may be warranted to rule out the possibility of fracture or arthritic degeneration to the joint.

Treatment

Management of this condition is usually successful without operative treatment. Activity load modification, icing and anti-inflammatory medication are the first line treatment options. We will offer appropriate deflective padding to redirect pressure away from the sesamoid bones. Footwear recommendations, especially for sporting activities, can also be provided to prevent recurrence. Orthotics will be useful to address the underlying biomechanical issues that have led to this injury.
